Shirley Fordney Hurd was a four-year starter for the Shippensburg basketball team from 1947-1951. She led the team scoring all four years.
After losing the first game of the season in December of 1947, Shippensburg went undefeated in 24 consecutive games. In 1949,the team went undefeated but has to settle for a tie in one game because over time was still several years in the future. The team lost one game in 1950 and then went undefeated in 1951 with an 8-0 record.
Hurd averaged 20 points a game for four years in a row. She held the Shippensburg scoring records for many years including a single game high of 35. In her four seasons the team compiled a 32-2-1 record for a winning percentage of .929.
Hurd also lettered four years in field hockey and was named to the All-Central Penn Team.
After graduation, Hurd taught and coached in the Hollidaysburg school district for many years before retiring from teaching.
