Dana Boyer was one of the top players on the Shippensburg volleyball team from 1985-88. At the time of her graduation, she held five school records, three of which she still holds. Her career hitting percentage mark of .300 still stands as the school record among players with at least 1,500 attempts while her 100 block solos in 1988 and 221 in her career are tops in school history.
Boyer also held the school record for kills in match with 28 against Mansfield in 1987, until it was broken 15 years later when Kelly Laughlin totaled 30 against Kutztown in 2002. Her 10 solo blocks against Elizabethtown in 1986 was also the school record for six years until 1992.
Boyer totaled 765 career kills, 560 of which came as a junior and senior when she led the team with 273 and 287, respectively.
As a reserve in 1985, Boyer totaled 31 kills and a .299 hitting percentage. She also had five solo blocks and six block assists.
In 1986, Boyer worked her way into the starting lineup where she helped lead the team to an 18-14 overall record while establishing school records for kills in a match, solo blocks in a match and solo blocks in a season. She totaled a .277 hitting percentage, 62 block solos and 39 block assists, all team-highs, while posting 174 kills, 23 service aces and 112 digs which were second on the team behind current Shippensburg Athletics Hall of Famer Kim Bedford.
As a junior in 1987, Boyer led the team in kills while committing just 67 errors in 664 attempts for a .310 hitting percentage. She also led the team in blocks for the second consecutive season, totaling 52 solo and 69 assists. Boyer set two school records, including kills in a match with 28 against Mansfield as well as block assists in a season.
Also that year, Boyer was named co-Most Valuable Player along with Susan Davis as Shippensburg defeated Slippery Rock in the PSAC Volleyball Championship before losing to East Stroudsburg in the final.
In 1988, Boyer led the team in kills for the second-straight year with 287, the third-highest total in school history at the time, while becoming the first and only player to total 100 solo blocks, breaking her previous school record of 62 set in 1986. She also committed just 98 errors in 611 attempts for a .309 hitting percentage. Boyer also finished second on the team in block assists with 61 and was third in service aces with 42.
Shippensburg had three winning seasons during Boyer’s four years with the team, highlighted by a 22-11 record and a third-place finish at the PSAC Volleyball Championship in 1988. In 1985, the Lady Raiders had a 20-15 record and finished second in the PSAC tournament. Despite finishing with a 15-16 record in 1987, Shippensburg finished second at the PSAC championship for the second-straight season.
