Cheryl Maddock Farrell, a native of Factoryville and a member of the Class of 1982, played a key role when the Lady Raiders field hockey team won the Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (AIAW) Division III national championship in 1979. She set the school single season record for assists with nine, a mark that would last until 1985. The Lady Raiders finished the season with a 16-2-3 record. The following year she made five assists as Shippensburg compiled a record of 12-4-2 and finished second in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference.

One of the highlights of the year was the Lady Raiders performance at the Virginia Tech Tournament. Shippensburg took first place by beating Trenton State, Virginia Tech, and Clemson. Maddock set the career record for assists with 17 by making three more during her senior season in 1981.

After graduation Maddock became an aerobics teacher and a field hockey official, living in Clarks Summitt, Pa. She also worked for Aureus Limited in West Pittston as a customer service representative.
