Carole Guise-Bowman of Hershey, Class of 1962, was one of the top female athletes of her era at Shippensburg in the late 1950s and early 1960s. She lettered in three sports, basketball, tennis and field hockey.
Bowman’s best seasons in basketball were 1960 and 1961. In 1960 she helped Shippensburg improve its record from 3-5 in 1959 to 6-2. She was Shippensburg’s leading scorer with 13.9 points per game. The following year the Lady Raiders were 5-3 and Bowman averaged 13.6 points per game. Her career high was 27 points in a 47-39 win over Millersville.
Shippensburg established a women’s tennis team in 1960 and Bowman was one of the pioneers on that first team. In field hockey she was a standout for three years. She led the team in scoring in the fall of 1959 with six goals.
Following graduation Bowman taught for five years in elementary school. She then worked as a member of the social ministry committee and the Lutheran women’s committee. She also became active with Meals on Wheels in Derry Township.
