Todd Long was a three-year starter at third base for the Raiders from 1984-86 after arriving from West Virginia University as a sophomore transfer. Long was an incredibly consistent and productive performer who graduated with a tie for the career home run record after setting the SU single-season home record (12) in his debut season.

Long was a two-time All-Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) performer (All-PSAC East in 1986, All-PSAC South in 1985) and a two-time All-Region performer. As a senior, Long was named to the All-Tournament team for the 1986 PSAC Baseball Championships.

His breakthrough sophomore season not only featured his single-season school record for home runs but also produced career highs in total bases (97), slugging percentage (.610) and walks (35). Arguably, his best season may have come as a senior, when he produced single-season bests in batting average (.368), hits (57), doubles (12), RBIs (55), on-base percentage (.474) and stolen bases (12).

Long drew more walks than strikeouts in each of his three seasons – resulting in an impressive .445 career on-base percentage. He was a .337 career hitter who totaled 55 career extra-base hits.

In his three years with the Raiders, SU Baseball compiled a 106-42-1 record, won two PSAC Championships, one PSAC South Division title, and qualified for three PSAC and NCAA Regional Tournaments. The squad posted virtually identical records each season (36-14-1 in 1984, 35-14 in 1985, 35-14 in 1986).

After graduation, Long worked for three years in the Waynesboro Area School District as a middle school history teacher and as a coach. In 1989, Long married Marjean Work ’85, and moved to her hometown. He continued his teaching and coaching career at Solanco High School – teaching social studies at the high school level for 10 years. He also worked as the head baseball coach for 11 years in addition to service as an assistant varsity football and basketball coach. Two of Long’s standout baseball players from Solanco were selected in the third round of the Major League Baseball (MLB) Draft.

Long earned his master’s degree in Educational Leadership from Lock Haven University. He has served as a mentor to his colleagues and a cooperating teacher for 19 student teachers to date. For the last 20 years, Long has taught Government and American History at Swift Middle School in the Solanco school district.

Long and his wife have been married for 28 years. His wife, Marjean, is a school counselor in the Penn Manor School District. The couple are the proud parents of Jordan Elizabeth Long-Carta, a fifth-year school teacher, and Madison Long, a marketing assistant for the Barley & Snyder Law Firm in Lancaster. They also have a basset hound, Deuce.
