Rich Dyer is the seventh-leading scorer in SU men’s basketball history with 1,393 career points and was a first team All-PSAC and NABC All-District Team selection as a senior in 1983. He still holds the school record for most points in a game with 46 against Millersville, and his 24.1 points per game average is the fourth best in team history and the second best since the team moved to Heiges Field House.
Dyer was the team’s point guard and was the team captain in his senior year. He was also chosen to the All-PSAC Eastern Division Second Team in 1982 and broke into the starting lineup his freshman season by starting the last 14 games of the 1979-80 season and averaging double figures in scoring in each contest.
His point total of 651 for the 1982-83 season set an SU single season record that lasted for eight seasons. It remains the second highest single-season point total in Red Raider history, ranking just one point behind Keith Hill’s output for the 1990-91 season.
Dyer was on a winning team for all four years at Shippensburg, and during his junior year Shippensburg set a record for wins in a season with 19. During his senior year, he led the team to 16 wins and its second consecutive berth in the PSAC tournament. In his 46-point game, Dyer tied the school record for made field goals in a contest set by John Smith with 20.
As the point guard, Dyer led Shippensburg in assists during his sophomore and junior seasons. Dyer averaged 4.5 assists per game for the 1981-82 season, finishing the year with 122 in 27 games. As a sophomore, Dyer averaged 3.8 assists per game through 22 contests.
He finished his career with one of the highest shooting percentages in team history, making at least 50 percent of his shots in all four seasons with the Red Raiders. His best year came as a senior, when Dyer shot 57.9 percent and connected on 268 of 463 shots from the field, ranking seventh in the nation in scoring.
