Ed Gulian, a 1930 graduate of Gettysburg College, was a very successful football coach in Shippensburg. Taking over a program that had a losing record that had a losing record the year before, Gulian had a 1-6 record his first year in 1933 and then eight non-losing seasons in a row, including Pennsylvania Conference championships in 1935 and 1938. His 1934 team won five games in a row before losing the last two, one of which was to Indiana, the conference champion that year.

The 1935 conference championship team had a 7-1 record with the only loss a 13-6 decision at Indiana. The team outscored the opposition 171-19 and had six shutouts.

The 1936 team was second in the conference. The raiders won seven games in a row but lost at Lock Haven 9-7 in a rain storm. The team again shutout the opposition six times and had a 7-1 record. The team gave up only 15 points and its average of 1.87 points per game allowed is the school record.

In 1937, for the third year in a row, Shippensburg shutout the opposition six times in eight games, allowing just 19 points while compiling a 5-1-2 record.

After the 1942 season, Gulian served in the Navy during World War II and then returned to campus in 1946. He coached during the 1946-47 academic years then left Shippensburg for Albright College. He had a career record of 47-28-8 for a winning percentage of .614. His 47 wins is the most by any football coach at Shippensburg and his winning percentage is among the highest.

Gulian also coached baseball for eight seasons (1936-42, 47) His teams compiled a 50-29 record for a winning percentage of .633. The Raiders won the conference title in 1941.
