Tom Magill, a native of Bloomsburg and resident of Millerstown, lettered three times each and track and soccer.

Magill was a distance runner with the Red Raider track team. In 1970, he took second place at the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) championship in the mile run with a school record time of 4:23.5. The following year he set another school record that lasted six years by running the mile in 4:20.8

In soccer, Magill led Shippensburg to its first PSAC title in 1971. During his three years on the varsity squad, the Red Raiders compiled a record of 24-8-5. After the team went 6-4 in 1969, Magill helped Shippensburg gain a share of the PSAC Eastern Division crown in 1970 with a 9-2-2 record. A playoff with Millersville resulted in 0-0 tie. Millersville was awarded the berth in the conference championship game by virtue of having more corner kicks in the game. The following year Shippensburg won the Eastern Division title and tied Lock Haven 0-0 in the conference championship game. The Red Raiders were declared co-champions and finished with a 9-2-3 record. Shippensburg’s only losses in 1970 and 1971 were to East Stroudsburg, a perennial PSAC power, and two nationally ranked NCAA Division I teams, Penn State and Philadelphia Textile.

Former Shippensburg head soccer coach Tony Puglisi said, “As a soccer player, Tom contributed immensely to the college’s success in the early 1970s. It was at that time that that Shippensburg gained a lot of respectability in soccer and I feel Tom was an instrumental leader. In my opinion, without his leadership, we would have been just another team.”

After graduation, Magill taught at Halifax Middle School and Kisacoquillas Junior High School. He then taught chemistry at Greenwood High School.
