The late Jack Green was one of the finest athletes ever to play at Shippensburg. He lettered 12 times earning four letters each in football, basketball, and track. Though a good basketball player, Green made his biggest impact in football and track.
Beginning in the fall of 1928, Green set numerous school records. For his grid career he set the record for touchdowns with 27, a mark that lasted until 1978.
In 1931, Shippensburg won the Pennsylvania State Teachers College Conference crown with a 6-1-1 overall record. Green was captain of the team and he set several school records. He set the school and Pennsylvania Conference record for most touchdowns in one game by scoring six times in the 65-0 win over Kutztown. That record still stands today.
A few weeks later, Green scored all the points in a 30-0 win over Bloomsburg, scoring five touchdowns. One of his touchdowns was a 92-yard interception return. Green finished the season with 15 touchdown, a record that has since not been broken.
In track and field, Green was considered the best athlete in the Pennsylvania conference by many observers. He won six individual titles at the conference championships, including four consecutive wins in the 440. His school record of 48.8, set at the 1932 conference championships, was not broken until 1985.
Green also anchored the Red Raider mile relay team to a victory at the Penn Relays in the Normal School Championship Mile of America in 1931. Later in the spring he led the team to its first track and field conference championship.
Green was an assistant coach during the 1932-33 academic year and following graduation, he returned home to Carrolltown where he had a distinguished career in teaching.
