Doug Furness of Fayettville, Pa., Class of 1987, roamed the outfield for the Shippensburg baseball team from 1984-1987. In that four-year span, he wrote his name in the record books and helped the Red Raiders to four-straight NCAA Division II Tournament appearances.

Furness made an immediate impact as a freshman by hitting .347 and driving in 25 runs in 45 games. Also, he did not record an error all season. Those numbers earned him a spot on the All-PSAC team.

The following season, Furness continued his hot hitting. He batted at a .353 clip and drove in 25 runs once again. It was his record-breaking junior season that made Furness nationally known. He was named All-PSAC and Honorable Mention All-America by leading the team in hitting with a .392 average. He also swiped a then school record 33 bases.

In his senior season, Furness served as a team captain and posted a .368 batting average, 44 runs, 42 RBI, and 29 stolen bases.

Furness now ranks high in Shippensburg history in games played with 185 and in stolen bases with 75.

He played on four consecutive NCAA Tournament teams and the Red Raiders were crowned PSAC Champions three times in four seasons. Furness’ Red Raiders also finished second in the NCAA South Atlantic Regional twice.

Furness graduated from Shippensburg in 1987 and later earned his master’s degree in 1997. He taught junior social studies Carlisle High School.
