Sandy Stewart Bodek, a native of Mechanicsburg, was a four letter winner for the Lady Raiders basketball team and led Shippensburg to a 38-2 record from 1966 to 1969.
Arriving at Shippensburg in the fall of 1965, Bodek led the Lady Raiders in scoring with an average of 17.0 points per game. The Lady Raiders compiled a 10-0 record. The following season Shippensburg went 9-1 and Bodek led the team in scoring again with an average of 11.8 points per game. Shippenburg’s winning streak came to an end at 17 straight.
Shippensburg went 9-1 in 1968 and began what would turn out to be a school record 24-game winning streak. The Lady Raiders lost the season opener to Elizabethtown and then won nine in a row. In 1969, Shippensburg finished with a 10-0 season and Bodek finished her career with 438 points, the school record at the time. The Lady Raiders had the distinction of beating both Penn State and the University of Maryland in 1968 and 1969 and Bodek’s teams went 4-0 against Penn State during her career.
Since graduation Bodek worked as a teacher in the Cumberland Valley School System and worked as a senior computer programmer. While living in Fairfax, Va., she became a computer software consultant to Basic Education Inc. in Falls Church, Virginia. She also coached the girls JV basketball team Heidelberg American High School in Germany during the 1982-83 school year.
