Robert “Bob” Wood was an All-American diver for Shippensburg from 1976-80 who graduated with five of the six school records for diving. With diving having been discontinued at Shippensburg in 1992, Wood’s records will continue to stand as the tradition of excellence for the Raiders.
He is the only SU diver in history to win a PSAC Championship in diving – winning both the 1-meter and 3-meter titles as a senior in 1980. At nationals, Wood earned All-America honors with seventh-place finishes in both events despite an extremely talented field. He has three career All-America diving performances at nationals.
Among his school records include marks for 1-meter (6 optional) [285.40 points on 1/31/77], 1-meter (6) [299.90 points on 12/5/78], 1-meter (11) [414.55 points on 2/28/80], 3-meter (6) [289.50 points on 1/6/80] and 3-meter (11) [403.35 points on 3/1/80].
Wood became the team’s top diver early on as a freshman. He was consistently among the Top 6 finishers at the PSAC championships and a Top 15 national finisher as both a sophomore and a junior. In fact, as a junior, Wood finished ninth, also good enough to merit an All-America classification.
A momentous achievement to which Wood contributed was an SU dual meet win over Clarion. It was the first time Shippensburg had ever defeated Clarion in a dual meet; at the time Clarion was a national power and perennial PSAC champion who had not lost to a PSAC school in five years. In that dual meet, Wood earned SU’s first-ever diving victory in a head-to-head matchup with Clarion.
After earning his degree from Shippensburg, Wood became the diving coach at Western Kentucky University and earned his MBA from the school in 1981. Since then, Wood has enjoyed a broad base of leadership experience in a variety of forest products industries all based in York.
He served in numerous senior leadership roles for more than 20 years with Glatfelter, a $1.5-billion manufacturer of specialty products. Wood then joined Fypon, Ltd., a manufacturer of polyurethane millwork, as CFO. Since 2005, Wood has worked alongside a first-class team at John H. Myers & Son as the President of the company. Myers is the leading supplier of building supplies and services to builders and remodelers in Central Pennsylvania and Northern Maryland.
Wood’s roots are in Carlisle, where he was raised by Richard and Shirley Wood. After Shirley’s homecoming, a Shippensburg scholarship was formed in her memory for a deserving member of the Carlisle community. Wood’s two sisters, Cheryl and Vonda, also reside in York.
Bob is married to Cheryl, who he met early in his tenure at Glatfelter. Married for 29 years, the couple has three children: Valerie, Ryan and Brad. The Wood family considers Sandy Cove Ministries, in North East, Maryland, as a second home – they have vacationed there for more than 20 years. Bob serves on Sandy Cove’s Board of Trustees.
