Jay McHenry was an All-America pitcher for the baseball team and helped the Red Raiders win three PSAC championships in four years. The team also competed in the NCAA tournament all four seasons. McHenry set a Shippensburg career record for wins with 27.
As a freshman in 1984, McHenry compiled a 5-2 record. The highlight of the season was in the PSAC tournament when he pitched a one-hit 4-0 shutout over Clarion in the championship game. The Red Raiders lost the first game of the double elimination tournament but came back with four straight wins to take the title.
As a sophomore his record improved to 6-1. The team won the PSAC Southern Division championship but faltered in the conference championship tournament and finished third. A week later the team finished second in the NCAA Division II South Atlantic Region tournament.
In 1986, McHenry earned All-America honors for the first time. He was selected third team All-America by the American Baseball Coaches Association. McHenry had an 8-1 record with a 2.90 earned run average. The Red Raiders won the PSAC tournament and competed in the NCAA Division II North Central Region tournament. McHenry’s only loss was a 2-1, 10-inning defeat in the NCAA tournament against Lewis University (Ill.).
McHenry earned third team All-America honors again as a senior. He finished with an 8-1 record again and a 2.91 earned run average. The Red Raiders won the conference title and finished third in the NCAA North Central Region tournament. In his last collegiate outing he won an 11-3 decision over Mankato State (Minn.) in game two of the regional.
At the time of his graduation, McHenry held the Shippensburg single season record for strikeouts with 70 in 1986 and the career record with 194 strikeouts. He finished his career with a 27-5 record for an .844 winning percentage.
McHenry’s statistics are amongst Ship’s best. He had a career 214 innings pitched, 1.75 walks per nine innings in a season, and 8 wins in a season. McHenry’s career strikeout total is amongst the best in Shippensburg history.
Following graduation McHenry worked for United Telephone and was a highly successful pitcher and coach for the Mt. Holly baseball team in the West Shore League. He also provided clinics for Little League players.
McHenry later became employed by GiantLoop Networks of Waltham, Mass. GiantLoop is a provider of data center networking services and software to 2,000 global businesses. He represented the company in the Mid-Atlantic area.
