Gregg Sanders was a standout on Shippensburg’s track and field and cross country teams. He lettered four years in cross country and twice in track and field. He earned All-America honors in cross country his junior and senior years.
Sanders has been an inspiration for many Shippensburg distance runners. Through hard work and perseverance during his freshman and sophomore years he was able to develop from an average runner into a national leader.
Sanders made a big impact in the fall of 1979, leading the Red Raiders to national prominence. Shippensburg placed seventh at the national championships.
In the fall of 1980 Shippensburg had an even better season. The Red Raiders finished second in the PSAC championships and ninth at the NCAA national championships. At the end of the season Sanders won the PSAC and the NCAA Division II Northeast Region championships in Kenosha, Wisconsin to earn All-America honors again. Because of his high finish Sanders was able to qualify for the NCAA Division I national championships, which was run only two days after the Division II meet. He managed to finish 60th and is one of only three Red Raiders to ever qualify for the Division I nationals.
In the spring of 1981, Sanders enjoyed his best season in track and field. He broke the 30 minute mark in the 10,000 meters while racing at the Penn Relays and then he helped Shippensburg finish second in the team standings at the PSAC championships. The Red Raiders missed winning the team title by only one point.
Since graduation Sander has worked as an accountant in private industry as an accountant and then as an auditor with the federal government. He then became a senior audit manager for Chevy Chase Bank in Frederick, Maryland.
