Lyndal Kratzer-Shadel was a three-sport athlete at Shippensburg University. A native of Richboro and a 1975 graduate of East Juniata High School, she was one of the pioneers of the softball team. She also lettered three years in field hockey and basketball.
Playing third base, Kratzer-Shadel hit .529 with the club team in 1977. In 1978, the team was elevated to varsity status and she served as co-captain. The Lady Raiders compiled a 12-2 record that year.
Kratzer-Shadel batted .375 with 21 hits in 56 at-bats. She led the team in runs scored with 17 and stolen bases with eight. She also hit one double and two homers while driving in nine runs. Kratzer-Shadel was name MVP for her efforts.
In field hockey, Kratzer-Shadel lettered as a freshman as the team went 4-5-2 in 1975. She tallied two goals. In 1976, she was team co-leader in scoring with six goals. The team compiled a record of 9-2-3 that year going undefeated in its last eight games. The following season, Kratzer-Shadel was second on the team in scoring with seven goals while helping the Lady Raiders complete an undefeated season with an 11-0-2 record. A new school undefeated streak was set at 21 straight games. The streak would extend another six games into the 1978 season before it was broken. Kratzer-Shadel finished her career with 15 goals in 38 games for an average of 0.38 goals per game.
In basketball, Kratzer-Shadel helped Shippensburg gain a berth in the Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (AIAW) tournament in 1978. The team had a 13-3 overall record during the regular season and lost two games in the tournament. Kratzer-Shadel lettered as a reserve for three seasons.
Kratzer-Shadel only played three years at Shippensburg. Majoring in medical technology she completed her studies at the Geisinger Medical Center in Danville. She was on the Dean’s List every semester of her academic career.
Kratzer-Shadel became a medical technologist at Geisinger and while living in Mt. Pleasant Mills.
