Bob Chubb, from Middletown, lettered four years for the Shippensburg University basketball team from 1947 to 1951. He also lettered three years for the football team.
Chubb was a key reserve his freshman year and then led the team in scoring his junior and senior years. A 6-8 center, he helped Shippensburg put together four straight winning seasons.
Chubb led Shippensburg in scoring his junior and senior years with averages of 14.4 and 17.9 points per game. He also averaged 15.0 points per game his sophomore season.
As a freshman Chubb scored 54 points in 12 games, helping the Red Raiders put together an 11-5 overall record for Coach Harold Kramer. At the time, the .688 winning percentage was the best in the school’s history as a four year institution.
Shippensburg went 10-9 in the 1948-49 seasons and Chubb scored 284 points and led the team in scoring in seven of the games. His best game was a 26 point output in the Red Raiders 64-40 win over Indiana (Pa.).
During the 1949-50 season, Chubb scored 259 points in 18 games. Shippensburg finished the season with a 10-8 record for coach Tom Crist.
Chubb’s best year was his senior year. He scored 325 points in 19 games and became the first Shippensburg player in school history to score 40 or more points in a game. He tallied 41 points in Shippensburg’s 62-57 win over Lock Haven. He led team in scoring in nine games and scored 20 or more points, five times.
Following graduation Chubb played for the Washington Generals while touring with the Harlem Globetrotters for the 1952-53 season.
Chubb retired to Lansdale after teaching at North Penn High School until 1985. He was chair of the business department and later assistant principal at North Penn. He also was head football and basketball coach there for many years. In addition to teaching he was involved in many community service and political organizations.
