One of the top scorers in Shippensburg women’s basketball history, Spencer currently ranks high on the school’s career list after totaling 1,976 points from 1992-96. As a senior, she helped lead the Lady Raiders to their first of a conference-record six PSAC championships en route to the team’s first of three Elite Eight appearances and a berth in the NCAA championship game.
Spencer set 10 school records, including most points scored in a season with 670 as a senior, three-pointers made in a game, season and career and highest free throw percentage in a game after making 18-of-18 at Clarion on Jan. 13, 1996. Spencer came to Shippensburg in the fall of 1991 but took a medical red-shirt during the 1991-92 season because of a knee injury. The following season, she averaged 8.7 points per game as the team’s top newcomer.
As a red-shirt sophomore during the 1993-94 season, Spencer improved her scoring average to 18.6 points per game en route to being named All-PSAC Western Division Second Team. That year, she was named PSAC Western Division Player of the Week three times.
In 1994-95, Spencer received Kodak All-American Honorable Mention honors, All-East Region, All-ECAC and All-PSAC Western Division First Team honors. She led the conference in scoring at 21.2 points per game, which is the third-highest scoring average in team history, and three-pointers. That year, Spencer set the school record for three-pointers made in a game with eight against Clarion on Jan. 14, 1995 before equaling the mark with eight against Indiana (Pa.) on Feb. 8, 1995.
Shippensburg finished the 1994-95 season with a 22-7 overall record, setting a then-school record for wins in a season while advancing to the PSAC and NCAA regional tournament semifinals.
As a senior during the 1995-96 season, Spencer was named PSAC Western Division Player of the Year and ECAC Division II Co-Player of the Year. She was also a Kodak All-America Honorable Mention, All-East Region and All-PSAC Western Division First Team selection for the second-straight year. In leading Shippensburg to the NCAA championship game, Spencer set the school record for points in a season with 670 for an average of 19.7 per game while hitting 92 three-point field goals, one shy of her school record of 93 set a year earlier.
Spencer was named to the Elite Eight All-Tournament team and Most Valuable Player of the NCAA East Regional tournament in leading the Lady Raiders to a new school record 28 wins as the team finished the season with a record of 28-6.
In addition to her successful basketball career, Spencer also played on the women’s lacrosse team as a senior in 1996, helping the team advance to the PSAC championship game with a 9-5 overall record. She totaled 30 goals, eight assists and 38 points in 12 games for an average of 3.17 points per game, all totals that were the second-best on the team. That year, she received All-PSAC and IWLCA All-America Second Team honors.
