Bill Cockley was a co-captain of Shippensburg’s undefeated 1952 football team. He also lettered four years in baseball.
A two-way player, Cockley was a superb blocker at guard as well as an integral defender. Shippensburg finished their perfect 1952 season with a 7-0 record. The Raiders limited their opposition to a measly 2.9 points per game and was ranked fifth in the nation in total defense. On offense that season, Cockley spearheaded the blocking which averaged better than 5 yards per play and produced an outstanding 38.0 points per game.
After the season, Cockley was named to the All-Pennsylvania conference team and was selected to play in the annual Blue-Gray game. He was the only Shippensburg player ever selected to compete in a major post-season all-star game.
Cockley entered the field of education and served as a Regional Elementary Principal for the Chambersburg Area School District.
