A native of Port Royal, Dean Bergstresser lettered in baseball and football.
Bergstresser made his mark in baseball, leading the Red Raiders to the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) baseball championship in 1941. The Red Raiders compiled a 10-3 record with Bergstresser playing first base. He hit .403 with three home runs. He also led the Red Raiders to a 33-5 win over Kutztown, collecting six hits in the game. The six hits in one game set a school record.
During his junior year he scored four runs in a 24-5 win over Bloomsburg and had three hits in a 13-7 win against Indiana (Pa.). As a sophomore he got off to a slow start but finished with a five game hitting streak, getting nine hits in 21 at-bats. He finished the 1939 season with a .313 batting average.
In football, Bergstresser lettered four years for the Red Raiders and all four years were winning seasons. A lineman, he helped Shippensburg compile a 5-1-2 record and register six shutouts. The Red Raiders had a 6-1-1 mark in 1938 and shared the PSAC title. During his four seasons in Shippensburg the football team had a 17-8-6 record.
A former sales representative for the Sperry New Holland company, Bergstresser served for more than 30 years in the Port Royal Lions Club and was chairman of the Port Royal Municipal Authority. He also was campaign chairman and Juniata County president of the American Cancer Society. He was a past president of the Lost Creek Golf Course, past member of the Port Royal Borough Council and Past Council Member of the Port Royal Lutheran Church.
