What is Title IX and how does it affect and protect me?

Title IX prohibits sex discrimination in educational institutions that receive federal funding.

Title IX involves the following:
  • Protection for students and employees from all forms of sex discrimination and sex-based harassment in ALL academic programs.
  • Requirement that universities respond promptly to all complaints of sex discrimination and take swift action to end any sex discrimination and prevent its recurrence.
  • Protection for students and employees who are pregnant or have pregnancy-related conditions.
  • Requirement for universities to provide supportive measures to students and employees affected by conduct that may constitute sex discrimination.
  • Protection for LGBTQI+ students from discrimination based on sexual orientation, gender identity, and sex characteristics.
  • Protection from retaliation for students, employees, and others who employ their Title IX rights.
  • Ensure that universities share their nondiscrimination policies with all students and employees.
  • Consent must be given before and during sexual activity and can be taken back at any time.  A person intoxicated or under the influence of drugs cannot give consent.
  • Anything involving a minor (a person under the age of 18) should be reported to the campus police and the Title IX Coordinator immediately.
  • Report violations of the Title IX policy to the Title IX Coordinator/Compliance Officer.
  • Please note that failure to comply with the University policy and not reporting (if you are a mandatory reporter) could result in discipline for faculty, staff and students.
