Dr. Gilmore B. Seavers of Carlisle, the former president of Shippensburg University, has been named an honorary member of the SU Athletic Hall of Fame.

While president at Shippensburg from 1970 to 1980, Seavers helped guide the development of the total athletic program at Shippensburg. The total number of sports at Shippensburg increased from 12 in 1970 with nine men’s and three women’s sports, to 19 in 1980, with ten men’s and nine women’s sports. Heiges Field House and Seth Grove Stadium also were opened while he was president.

Seavers made two other initiatives that are an integral part of the total athletic scene at Shippensburg today. The university opened its facilities for a summer athletics camps program that afforded youngsters the opportunity to be able to receive quality coaching instruction from the Shippensburg coaching staffs in various sports.

The other initiative was the establishment of a special relationship that the university enjoys with the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association (PIAA). The PIAA utilizes Shippensburg’s facilities for many of its district and state championship competitions.

A member of Shippensburg’s Class of 1938, Seavers has a long and distinguished career in education. In addition, he served in the U.S. Army Air Force during World War II and achieved the rank of captain.

Since his retirement, the Carlisle native served as a member of the South Central Educational Broadcasting Council and as a member of the boards of directors of Capital Blue Cross in Harrisburg, the United Telephone Company and the Cumberland Valley Savings and Loan Association. He was also very active with the Shippensburg University Foundation.
