Jason McMullen became the first of only two SU student-athletes to finish their careers as three-time NCAA All-Americans in the javelin. The 5-foot, 9-inch, roughly 155-pound competitor was a champion of technique who was an integral member of several successful SU championship track & field squads.
At the NCAA national championships, McMullen finished fourth as a sophomore in 1995, seventh as a junior in 1996 and third as a senior in 1997. His throw of 226 feet at the national championships in 1995 is, to date, the best performance-for-place effort in D-II Championships history and is still the SU school record despite 16 SU All-American efforts (including one national champion) occurring since then.
In PSAC tournament competition, McMullen was a two-time conference champion – winning as a sophomore in 1995 on a throw of 222 feet, 6 inches despite injuring his ankle the day before the competition. The 1995 SU men’s squad won a conference championship with at least one place winner in every event – a feat unmatched in PSAC history.
McMullen won again as a senior in 1997 with a throw of 211 feet, 6 inches. SU won the 1997 team championship despite McMullen being SU’s only individual champion. He also placed sixth as a freshman in 1994 with a throw of 198 feet, 3 inches.
In addition to his work on the track & field squad, McMullen earned a varsity letter with the wrestling team.
McMullen is arguably one of the finest in a tradition of storied All-Americans in the javelin at Shippensburg University. SU has had 15 NCAA All-Americans in the javelin in its history that have combined for 24 All-America citations (including two national championships).
As a post-collegiate athlete from 1997-2002, McMullen recorded a personal best throw of 230 feet and was a competitor at the 2001 United States Track & Field Championships. He was also ranked five times on the Track and Field News Top 50 list.
A native of Port Royal, Pa., McMullen was recruited by Shippensburg University for wrestling and became a walk-on to the track & field team. His grandfather, John McMullen, was a 1934 Shippensburg State Teachers College graduate and was a member of the baseball team.
McMullen currently resides in Harrisburg and is employed as an account representative for Capital Business Systems. Over the years, McMullen has competed in the javelin several times at the annual Paul Kaiser Classic at Shippensburg University, with his most recent showing coming in 2011 where he finished second place.
