Irene Sgrignoli Mangle was one of the best field hockey players in the country in the early 1950s. Her first taste of success came during her sophomore season at Shippensburg University in the fall of 1952. She was selected as an alternate on the Central Penn All-Star team competing in the Mid-East Tournament in Wheeling, West Virginia. When one of the teams did not bring its players, she was selected to play and scored seven goals in one match during the tournament. Subsquently she was selected to compete at the National Hockey tournament in Sweetbriar, Virginia.

The following season Mangle helped Shippensburg compile a 5-3 won-loss record. She scored 15 goals during the season, an average of 1.87 per game. In post-season competition she was selected as a first team member of the Central Penn all-stars which competed in the Mid-East tournament at Wilson College. After a stellar performance in that tournament she was named to the Mid-East All-Star first team and competed in the National Tournament at Hunter College in New York City.

In the fall of 1954, Mangle was president of the Women’s Athletic Association (WAA) at Shippensburg and was again selected as a first team member of the Central Penn all-stars. She did not compete in the Mid-East and National Tournaments her senior year. In addition, Mangle was named to Who’s Who Among Students in American Colleges and Universities.

Mangle grew up in Mechanicsburg area and went to Enola High School. She became employed as Operations Research Systems Analyst with U.S. Army Logistics Evaluation Agency in New Cumberland.
