Sue Rich Zierden, a native of Broomall and a resident of Eastville, Virginia, lettered three years in field hockey and four in basketball.
In basketball Zierden helped Shippensburg compile a record of 33-7 in four seasons.
The Lady Raiders were 9-1 in Zierden’s freshman year and then after losing the season opener during the 1967-68, they won a school record 24 games in a row. The team finished 9-1 in 1968, 10-0 in 1969, and then won its first five games of the 1970 season. The Lady Raiders then dropped their last five to finish the season with a 5-5 record.
Zierden was the number two scorer on the team in 1969 with an average of 9.7 points per game. She Lady Raiders beat Maryland and Penn State in both 1968 and 1969. Shippensburg was 3-1 against Penn State during Zierden’s career.
Zierden was one of the top players on Shippensburg’s field hockey teams from 1966 to 1969. A center halfback, she lettered her last three seasons and was captain in 1968 and 1969.
Shippensburg compiled a 7-2 record in 1966, 5-0-1 in 1967, 8-0 in 1968, and 5-1-2 in 1969. The team had a 20 game undefeated streak from 1966-1969, including 11 straight wins from 1967-69. Zierden played a key role in the Lady Raiders’ 2-1 in over Penn State in the final game of her career. Zierden was chosen to play in the Mid-East All-Star tournament three years in a row. Her senior season she also played in the national all-star tournament at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor.
Zierden is currently a teacher at Heritage Elementary School. She has been active for more than 20 years tutoring disadvantaged children. She has also been involved in high school athletic boosters and teaches Sunday School.
