Considered by many observers to be the finest female athlete to ever compete for Shippensburg University, Dee Fichter Cross led the Field Hockey team to the AIAW Division III national championship in 1979.
Cross earned 12 letters during her career receiving four each in field hockey, basketball and lacrosse. She set school records in each sport.
In field hockey Cross holds the school career record for goals with 49. She also set the school single season record with 17 in 1970, the year the team won the national title. Cross was named Division III “Player of the Year” by Field Hockey News in 1979. In addition, she helped the team compile a 27 game undefeated streak that stretched from 1976-1978.
In basketball Cross was career scoring leader at the time of her graduation. She averaged 16.0 points per game her senior year.
In lacrosse, Cross helped Shippensburg set school records for wins in a season with nine in 1978 and 1979. The Raiderettes won 13 games in a row during those seasons. She holds the single season and career record for assists.
After graduation, Cross became active in women’s lacrosse and was a starting defensive player in the U.S. World Cup and U.S. National teams.
Cross became a teacher and coach serving as head field hockey coach and assistant basketball coach at Delaware Valley College in Doylestown.
