Larry "Yogi" Rhone was a two-sport athlete at Shippensburg in the mid-1950s. He played varsity football and baseball for four years. He excelled at football, where he was a three-year starter on offense and defense while also filling the role of place kicker.
Following a backup role in his freshman season of 1954, Rhone became a starter at fullback and outside linebacker as a sophomore. In 1955, Shippensburg compiled a 4-2-2 record and Rhone saw quite a bit of action. Rhone found himself as a regular in the Shippensburg backfield, splitting the workload with Don Stankus and Jim Miller.
In 1956, Shippensburg finished with a 6-2 record. Rhone was second on the team in scoring with 17 points, as he scored two touchdowns and converted five of nine PAT attempts.
Rhone’s best season came in 1957, as the Red Raiders finished with a 6-0-1 record and a 5-0 mark in PSAC play. Rhone scored a team-high 47 points on the season, which stood as the best mark in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference. Shippensburg went on to become co-champion of the PSAC in 1957, sharing the honor with Lock Haven. For his play, Rhone was awarded with a nomination to the All-PSAC Second Team as a fullback.
Rhone finished the 1957 season with 268 yards on 61 carries, five touchdowns and 17 PAT conversions. During Rhone’s three years as a starter, Shippensburg compiled a 16-4-3 record. He was instrumental in establishing Shippensburg as a contender and helped to solidify a Red Raider defense that was ranked first in the country for small colleges in his senior campaign.
“Yogi” also served as a member of the Shippensburg baseball team during his four-year athletic career. In his senior year he served as the catcher on the 1958 PSAC Championship team.
