John Bay served Shippensburg as an athlete, coach, and administrator for many years. He made an impact on Red Raider athletics his very first year.
As a freshman, Bay led the Red Raiders to the Pennsylvania Conference title in 1935. A fullback on offense and a linebacker on defense, he led the team in scoring with eight touchdowns. The Red Raiders complied a 7-1 overall record.
The following year the Red Raiders had six shutouts again en-route to a 7-1 record and limited the opposition to only 15 points. Shippensburg was 7-1 again but finished second in the conference, losing the last game of the season.
During Bay’s four years of competition the football team amassed an impressive 25-4-3 record. He served as a co-captain his senior year and finished his career with 25 touchdowns.
As a member of coach Vint Rambo’s staff, he helped the Red Raiders develop some of their finest teams. The 1951-54 teams won a school record of 20 straight games.
From 1972 until his retirement in 1982, Bay served the University as field representative for Alumni affairs, helping in the areas of admissions and athletic recruiting. Another of his responsibilities involved liaison duties with PIAA in setting up various state and district championships.
