The late Walter Bailets, Class of 1935, lettered four years in both football and baseball. He was captain of the football team in the fall of 1934 and was captain of the baseball team for two seasons, 1934 and 1935.
Bailets was a starting guard on the football team. As a freshman he was a player on the Red and Blue’s 1931 championship team which compiled a 6-1-1 record. The next two seasons saw the team go 3-5 and 1-6.
Bailets played a key role on the 1934 team which won five games and lost only two. This was the first successful season for coach Gulian and laid the groundwork for future success. The team won five in a row before losing the last two to Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) powerhouses Indiana (the 1934 conference champion) and Lock Haven. Shippensburg would win the conference crown the following year. Bailets was named to the All-PSAC team in 1934.
In baseball, Bailets was the starting third baseman. He led the team to a 7-3 record in 1934. The team dropped to 2-7 in 1935.
Following graduation, Bailets returned to his hometown of New Cumberland and began teaching math at New Cumberland High School and later at Cedar Cliff High School from 1936 to 1972. He coached football and baseball.
In addition to teaching, Bailets was active with his church and many community service groups, including playground midget basketball and American Legion baseball.
