Ron “Reggie” Weiss was one of the best basketball players to ever compete for Shippensburg. He played guard and had the talent to shoot from the outside as well as drive inside.
Weiss came to Shippensburg in the fall of 1961. He saw limited action that first season and scored only 28 points. The 1963 team, Weiss’ sophomore season, was one of the best in school history, and he was the leading scorer. The Raiders compiled a 15-7 record, and Weiss scored 325 points in 20 games for an average of 16.3.
The next year, the team got off to a great start but went into a skid late in the season. Weiss scored 470 points in 22 games for an average of 21.4 even though the team ended up with a 10-12 record.
In 1965, his senior season, Weiss scored 517 points in 19 games, missing one game with an injury. He set the school record for points per game with 27.2, a mark that still stands today. He also scored 45 points in a game against Shepherd, a school record that went unbroken for 18 years.
Weiss finished his career with 1,340 points, the school record at the time. During his career, he also hit 54.1 percent of his shots from the field, a school record that stood until 1982.
Since graduation, Weiss became involved with teaching and coaching. While coaching at Reading Holy Name, one of his teams won the high school basketball state championship. He also taught at Wilson High School.
