Edgar Mitchell earned 12 letters in three sports, football, basketball and track.

Mitchell was a starting guard on the football team. He ran the interference for two Red Raider standouts, Bud Larimer and Jack Green, two of the charter members of the Shippensburg Hall of Fame who were inducted in 1986. Defensively Mitchell played linebacker.

In basketball Mitchell played guard for four years and was captain of the team in 1931, his season year.

Mitchell competed in the hurdles and the high jump for the Red Raider track and field team. In 1928 he was undefeated in both the high and low hurdles and the high jump in dual meets.

The following year Mitchell repeated that feat by remaining undefeated in all three sports. Shippensburg competed in the Pennsylvania Conference championships for the first time and Mitchell helped the Red Raiders place second in the team standings by winning the high jump with a leap of 5-7. He also finished third in the 220 yard low hurdles.

In 1930 Mitchell helped the Raiders finish second at the conference meet again. He placed second in the 220 low hurdles and took fourth in the high jump.

Shippensburg won the conference team title in 1931. Mitchell placed second in the 120 yard high hurdles and fourth in the high jump.

Following graduation Mitchell taught for two years in Romulus, New York, and then returned to Harrisburg and taught and coached at Edison Junior High School.

After attending the Wharton School for Accounting, Mitchell left the teaching profession and worked for the Harrisburg Gas Company which later became the UGI Corporation. He retired in 1972 as controller and then went into business for himself.

In 1933 Mitchell became an official in both basketball and football. He retired for basketball officiating after 25 years and football after 35 years.
