Dick Kuhns of Middleburg, Class of 1973, held the Shippensburg University soccer career scoring record for many years. In 1969 Kuhns, who was only a sophomore, helped turn around the fortunes of the Red Raiders, who had been winless the year before. The team finished the year with record of 6-4. Kuhns led the Red Raiders in scoring with 15 goals, which is still the school single season record. In the season finale Shippensburg scored a major upset of St. Joseph’s, the 11th ranked NCAA Division I team in the nation in 1969.

In 1970 Shippensburg finished the season in a tie for first place with Millersville for the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division title. In a playoff game, Shippensburg and Millersville battled to a 0-0 tie. Millersville got the nod to play in the PSAC championship by virtue of having more corner kicks. Kuhns was unable to play in that Millersville game because he was sidelined with an injury he suffered against Penn State in the last regular season game of the year. The Red Raiders finished the year with a 9-2-2 record and Kuhns led the team in scoring with 10 goals.

In 1971 Shippensburg was co-champion of the PSAC. The Red Raiders won the Eastern Division title and then tied Lock Haven in the conference championship game. Shippensburg finished the year with a 9-2-3 record. The only two losses of the year were to Division I powerhouses Philadelphia Textile and Penn State. Kuhns finished his career with 30 goals. That total was the school record until it was broken in 1990.

Kuhns grew up in Beavertown and went to West Snyder High School. After graduating from Shipo, he became a Housing Rehabilitation Specialist in the SEDA-Council of Governments, a regional planning and development agency located in Lewisburg.
