Doug Myers, a versatile and talented swimmers, became Shippensburg’s first national champion by winning the 500 yard freestyle in 1983. He was the first NCAA Division II national record holder, winning the 200 yard butterfly in 1984 with a time of 1:50.66. In addition, he was a 22-time NCAA Division II All-American in seven different events and a PSAC champion 10 times in individual events and once as a member of a relay team. At the time of his graduation, he held nine school records.

Myers came to Shippensburg in 1981 after a stellar high school career at Central Dauphin East. He made an immediate impact when he finished seventh at the NCAA Division II national championships in the 100 yard butterfly and sixth in the 200 yard butterfly. He earned All-America honors on three relays, anchoring the 400 medley, and the 400, and 800 freestyles. Earlier in the season Myers won the PSAC crowns in two butterfly races and helped three relay teams place among the top three.

As a sophomore in 1983, Myers won PSAC titles in the 500 freestyle and the 100 and 200 yard butterfly. The 400 yard medley relay team also won a conference title and the 400 and 800 free relays were among the top three.

At the national championships Myers won the 500 yard freestyle with a time of 4:33.25. He took second in the 100 yard butterfly with a time of 50.73, a nine-year school record, and fourth in the 200 yard butterfly. He anchored the same relays to All-America honors again.

In 1984, he took first place in the 100 and 200 butterfly races and the 200 yard freestyle. All three relays placed in the top three. At the NCAA championships he placed second in two races and set the national record for the 200 yard butterfly. He was runner-up in the 200 yard freestyle and in the 500 yard freestyle. Myers again anchored three relays to All-America honors.

As a senior, Myers earned All-America honors five more times. He won PSAC titles in the 200 and 400 yard individual medley races and helped the three relay teams place in the top three.

With Myers leading the way, Shippensburg enjoyed high team finishes at conference and national meets. The Red Raiders were second in the conference four years in a row and in the NCAA national meet they placed tenth in 1982, sixth in 1983, eighth in 1984, and eleventh in 1985.

Myers completed graduate work at Delaware Valley College in landscape architecture and became the Design Build Manager for Esbenshade Landscaping in Lancaster County. He has received honors for architecture and design landscaping. He also became a Commissioner with the Planning Commission of Strasburg and a member of the Joint Planning Commission between the Borough of Strasburg and Strasburg Township.
