Frank McCelland came to Shippensburg in the fall of 1949 from his hometown of Weriton, West Virginia. He earned seven letters in basketball and football during his collegiate career.
An All-Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference player during his junior and senior years, he was the first Red Raider basketball player to tally 1,000 career points in his career. He finished with 1,184 points. He also set a school record for points in a single game with 42, a mark that he held for 13 years.
In football McCelland was honorable mention All-Conference at end, and he helped Shippensburg go undefeated in 1952 with a 7-0 record. He had a big game against Kutztown, catching a 57- yard pass for a touchdown and then returning an interception 45 yards for another touchdown. Later in the year he caught a 47-yard touchdown pass against Slippery Rock and an 18-yard TD pass against Cheyney.
Following graduation McCelland taught and coached in Bedford for two years before joining the faculty at Shippensburg High School. He was an assistant football coach for several years and was then named head coach in 1966. He compiled a record of 98-50 and won two Blue Mountain League championships. In addition, he was head basketball coach from 1960 to 1967 and enjoyed similar success, winning a league title.
