Hall of Fame
The late Helen Kraiss was an esteemed coach and teacher at Shippensburg for 17 years from 1954 to 1971. During this time she served as an advisor to the Aquatic Club and to the Tau Kappa Honorary Athletic Sorority and coached the women’s hockey team to many outstanding seasons.
Kraiss coached the field hockey team from 1954 to 1966. In her 13 years at the helm, she had ten winning seasons including a 5-1 record in 1963 and 7-1-1 record in 1965.
During her lifetime Kraiss gave unceasingly of her time and effort to further all women’s athletics. Her concept of fair play in sports and her devotion to the role of physical education in one’s life set an example which is remembered by all the students she coached and taught.
A native of Chambersburg, Kraiss was a graduate of Temple University. She taught physical education in the Chambersburg school district for five years. Prior to coming to Shippensburg, she taught at Catawba College in North Carolina from 1942 to 1954.
