Kathy Stec, of Doylestown, Class of 1988, was a four time Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) champion and a NCAA Division II indoor national champion during her career in track and field. She also earned All-America honors six times in track and twice in cross country. Stec still holds seven team records with two outdoor records in the 1500 (4:35.30) and 3000 (9:42.5) meter runs and five indoor marks from 1000 yards to two miles.

Roth became the only Shippensburg female track athlete to ever win a national title in 1988, her senior year. She won the NCAA Division II indoor 3,000 meter run with a time of 9:53.54. That time is still the university’s indoor record.

Later in the spring Roth won the PSAC championship in the 1500 meter run and was second in the 800 meter run and second in the 3000 meters. At the NCAA outdoor national championships she earned All-America honors in the 3000 and 5000 meter runs, finishing sixth and fourth, respectively.

Another major accomplishment in track and field took place during her junior year in 1987 when she was named Most Outstanding Track Athlete at the PSAC championships. She won three individual titles in that meet, winning the 800 meter, 1500 meter and 3000 meter runs. At the national championships a few weeks later she earned All-America honors by finishing seventh in the 3000 meter run.

Other All-America honors earned by Roth took place in the spring of 1986 in the 3000 meters and in the indoor nationals in the 1500 and 3000 in the winter of 1987.

In cross country Roth earned All-America honors in the fall of 1985 and 1987. At the PSAC championships she wsa 16th as a freshman in 1984, seventh in 1985, fourth in 1986 and second in 1987. In her four seasons with the Lady Raiders, she was Shippensburg’s top finisher in every race of her four-year career with the exception of the first race of her freshman year.

Following graduation Roth worked as a para-legal for the firm of Power, Bowen and Valimont in Doylestown for several years.
