SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University men's swimming team celebrated Senior Day on Saturday as it concluded the home portion of its 2015-16 schedule with a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) dual meet against Clarion, claiming a 116-89 victory over the Golden Eagles inside Donald N. Miller Pool.
Shippensburg won eight of the 11 contested events in Saturday's dual meet, including victories in three of the individual races that featured seniors
Stefan Szilagyi and
Jake Dunnigan.
"Today was a great way to send out our seniors at home," head coach
Tim Verge '89 said. "We're having some very good individual performances, and we're getting solid swims, and it has paid off in some of these meets."
Dunnigan continues to win, claiming two more victories on Saturday to give him four for the weekend. The reigning PSAC Swimmer of the Week took first place in the 200-yard individual medley in 1:59.36 and later touched the wall first in the 200-yard breaststroke, posting a time of 2:11.25.
Szilagyi, meanwhile, won the 200-yard butterfly in 2:00.44 and bookended the day with appearances on SU's first-place relays.
The meet began with freshman
Shane Kaliszewski, junior
Tyler Clisham, Szilagyi and junior
Shaun Smith winning the 200-yard medley relay in 1:40.12, while sophomore
Kristian Voulopos, freshman
Evan Smith,
Shaun Smith and Szilagyi won the 200-yard freestyle relay in 1:29.66.
Voulopos and Kaliszewski were among the many standouts on the day. In the 50-yard freestyle, Voulopos nabbed the win in 22.36 seconds while Smith was within a touch at 22.41 seconds. Voulopos then went on to win the rugged 200-yard backstroke in 1:58.42, while Kaliszewski out-raced and out-touched a Clarion swimmer by a whisker in the 100-yard freestyle to claim victory in 49.51 seconds.
"To beat Clarion is exciting," Verge said. "We have some momentum there now to keep moving forward heading into the final two invites of this semester."
Shippensburg now has a week of training and tapering to get ready for its most important stretch of the season's first half. SU will be at George Mason from November 19-21 for the annual Patriot Invitational, as the Raiders will be let loose in pursuit of NCAA provisional qualifiers and its fastest times of the young season.
"We're enjoying competing and racing and going through this together," Verge said. "I hope we keep moving forward and having fun as we do, and let's see what happens 10 days from now. "We'll get a good bench mark for where we're at."
