SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University women's swimming team won six individual events on Saturday to gut out a close victory in its final home dual meet of the season, defeating Edinboro 133.5-127.5 in competition held at Donald N. Miller Pool.
SU honored seniors
Kaytee Garcia and
Sami Sabol in advance of its dual meet with Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) compatriot Edinboro, whose arrival was delayed due to travel issues. The Fighting Scots, who also competed in a home dual meet Friday night, won both relays to bookend the match and claimed five individual event victories.
Sophomore
Carly Alvarado and junior
MacKenna Angert each won multiple events on the day. Alvarado won the 100-yard backstroke in 1:00.61 and the 200-yard backstroke in 2:12.09 while also impressing in the 500-yard freestyle – placing third in 5:35.24.
Angert won the 200-yard freestyle in 2:00.59 after placing second in the 1,000-yard freestyle (11:06.77) just one event prior. She also won the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:25.26.
Junior
Erin Fife and sophomore
Sidney Owens also claimed key individual victories on the day. Fife won the 200-yard butterfly with a smart swim in 2:14.46, while Owens took third in that event (2:16.48) before claiming gold in the 200-yard individual medley (IM) on a time of 2:14.22.
Owens' win in the 200 IM helped SU clinch the team victory, as the dual meet score was within six points entering that final individual race.
Freshman
Gabriella Johnson made her dual meet debut after spending much of her fall competing with the SU volleyball team. Johnson immediately impressed – tying for first place in the 100-yard breaststroke swimming out of lane six with a time of 1:08.54. She later took second in the 200-yard breaststroke out of lane six, posting a time of 2:30.92.
Sophomore
Lauren Ellis notched a second-place finish in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:17.40 and swam the opening leg of SU's 200-yard freestyle relay that placed second. Ellis was joined on the final relay by Johnson, Angert and Fife; they teamed up for a time of 1:43.44.
SU's opening 200-yard medley relay that placed second in 1:53.11 included Alvarado, freshman
Grace Tothero, junior
Rhyan Rodriguez and Owens.
Shippensburg will travel to Bucknell in two weeks (Sat., Jan. 28) for its final competition of the regular season. The PSAC Championships are just one month away.
