PSACs: Men’s Swimming Finishes in Sixth Place at 2016 PSAC Championships

Dunnigan sets SU record in 200 breaststroke to highlight fourth and final day

YORK, Pa. – Senior Jake Dunnigan broke the school record in the 200-yard breaststroke on Sunday in the final individual swim of his collegiate career, highlighting the fourth and final day for the Shippensburg University men's swimming team at the 2016 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Championships being held inside the Graham Aquatic Center.

Dunnigan, competing in his first championship 'A' final in the event, placed fifth overall in 2:04.86 – a two-second PR – to surpass the previous SU record of Sean Minford (2:06.08) set in 2010. He qualified for the championship final after swimming 2:06.75, which at the time was another personal best.

"Jake's wanted that. It's just phenomenal," head coach Tim Verge said. "You could tell he was just so motivated to get it on the last 50 (yards). It's so exciting to see that for such a tremendous young man."

Overall, Dunnigan finishes as an 11-time PSAC individual place-winner, including all four of his individual swims at this year's conference meet. Sunday night's swim was just the second championship final of his career, as he placed fifth as a freshman in the 400-yard individual medley (IM).

Senior Stefan Szilagyi capped off a splendid individual career with his ninth PSAC place-winning performance – finishing 16th in the 200-yard backstroke in 1:58.75. Szilagyi reached the consolation 'B' final on the strength of a 1:57.78 morning swim, an effort that stands as a nearly five-second personal best.

Both Dunnigan and Szilagyi reached finals in all four of their events at a PSAC Championship for the first time in their career. Szilagyi made the championship 'A' finals in both butterfly events this week after making just one championship final in his previous three seasons.

"Our seniors have been tremendous," Verge said. "They've brought a lot to our program swimming-wise, personality-wise, and character-wise. We're really going to miss them. I think we had some exciting stuff for them to finish up with tonight. It will be fun to send them out on that note."

Sophomore Kristian Voulopos qualified for his second championships final of the week and placed fifth overall in the 200 backstroke with a time of 1:53.43. Voulopos, who had the odd distinction of tying another swimmer in either the prelims or finals in all of his individual events this week, maintained his excellent consistency by swimming 1:53.71 in the morning – both times just tenths of a second off his PR of 1:53.28.

Through two seasons, Voulopos is a seven-time PSAC place-winner who has achieved four Top 10 finishes to date.

Junior Tyler Clisham capped off a strong week with a PR in the 200-yard breaststroke. In the consolation 'B' final, swimming just before Dunnigan, Clisham touched the wall in 2:11.25 to place 12th overall. Clisham notched his second scoring performance of the meet and the fourth of his career by swimming 2:13.92 seconds in the morning and improving upon that effort by more than two seconds at night.

During morning prelims, junior Shaun Smith led a group of five Raiders in the 100-yard freestyle, swimming 48.22 seconds. Freshman Evan Smith improved his collegiate best in the event to 48.96 seconds.

The meet concluded with Voulopos, Shaun Smith, Szilagyi and Dunnigan completing the 400-yard freestyle relay in 3:10.75.

"It's not only the people that made finals; we had so many great swims this morning," Verge said. "We came back and raced hard tonight, and just kept pushing. It's going to be a fun bus ride home. We did some good stuff."
