The Shippensburg University men's swimming team went deep into the mountains of West Virginia on Friday night and came away with a dual-meet victory, posting a 112-87 score over host Fairmont State in a competition held inside the Feaster Center.
SU posted its first dual meet win of the year and avenged losses to the Fighting Falcons in each of the last three seasons.
"This was a really exciting meet for the men because they (Fairmont) have gotten the best of us the last couple of years," head coach
Tim Verge '89 said. "It was exciting to go down there and get a win. We're thin in some areas, so we moved some people around and the guys did well despite some of them not being in their signature events."
Senior
Jake Dunnigan won two events Friday night – the 200-yard individual medley (2:00.58) and the 100-yard breaststroke (1:00.10). Dunnigan improved his time in the 100 breaststroke by more than a second from last week. Both of his swims satisfied the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) qualifying standard.
Sophomore
Kristian Voulopos won the 100-yard backstroke by knocking more than a second off his time from last week, touching the wall first in 54.86 seconds. He also placed second in the 200-yard freestyle, swimming 1:53.54.
Freshman
Shane Kaliszewski got plenty of laps in Friday night; he notched a win in the 1000-yard freestyle (10:48.87) and later finished second in the 500-yard freestyle (5:14.72). Junior
Tyler Clisham won the 500 freestyle, swimming 5:13.25. Freshman
Theo McAllister was a Top 3 finisher in both the 500 freestyle (3rd, 5:21.12) and the 1000 freestyle (2nd, 11:00.44).
Senior
Stefan Szilagyi had a slight seasonal improvement in the 100-yard butterfly, placing second in 52.48 seconds. He also swam the third-leg of the victorious 400-yard medley relay team that featured Voulopos, Dunnigan and junior
Shaun Smith. That quartet swam 3:37.16.
"They were hungry – they wanted to go in there and stop a losing streak," Verge said. "The guys were excited to swim here and we had some really good performances. We're excited to see what happens next week. It'll be good to be at home. The guys raced really hard tonight and I'm excited about where we're at."
Shippensburg hosts Gannon at 6 p.m. next Friday before taking on Clarion the next day. Both meets are at home inside Donald N. Miller Pool.
