SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University men's swimming team won five events and honored senior
Quinton Beck on Friday night, but the Raiders were narrowly edged in their final home dual meet of the regular season, 105-100, by visiting Clarion from Donald N. Miller Pool.
"The guys battled very hard and produced some really good swims for right now," head coach
Tim Verge said of his squad. "Some guys stepped up in cases where people didn't have a lot of time between swims, and they got the job done. It was pretty exciting."
Beck swam on the 200-yard medley relay that placed second in 1:41.31 to start the meet. Individually, he placed third in the 100-yard breaststroke in a time of 1:04.28 and completed the 200-yard IM in 2:09.94.
Shippensburg produced 10 times on the night that satisfied the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) qualifying standard. Sophomore
Jeff Beyer had two of them, completing the 500-yard freestyle in 4:45.18 and the 1,000-yard freestyle in 10:07.01. He also led the 200-yard freestyle relay, accompanied by freshman
Hunter Keck, sophomore
Adam Fox and junior
Shane Kaliszewski, that won in 1:28.28.
Keck won the 50-yard freestyle with a great finish, out-touching his opponent and swimming 22.27 seconds. He took second in the 100-yard freestyle, swimming 48.58 seconds. Fox also notched a PSAC cut in the 50-yard freestyle, swimming 22.64 seconds. Kaliszewski recorded a PSAC cut in the 100-yard butterfly of 54.75 seconds.
Freshman
Joe Deemer won the 100-yard butterfly, touching the wall in 53.23 seconds, and finished second in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:48.30. Fellow freshman
Eric Zimmerman comfortably surpassed the conference standard in the 1,000-yard freestyle along with Beyer by swimming 10:12.78.
Sophomore
Nick Bloom achieved a pair of conference cuts, placing second in the 200-yard IM (2:02.77) and the 100-yard backstroke (55.28 seconds).
"I thought we raced hard, and we set ourselves well for going down the stretch," Verge said.
Shippensburg returns to action in two weeks for one of its most important meets of the regular season, the three-day Patriot Invitational hosted by George Mason University on November 16-18.
