SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University men's swimming team competed in its first dual meet of the 2017-18 season on Wednesday night and put forth several excellent races but dropped a 150.5 – 104.5 matchup with the IUP Crimson Hawks from inside Donald N. Miller Pool.
 
"We did some terrific things tonight," head coach Tim Verge said of his swimmers. "Our men swam very strong, we were very competitive at the top end of things. It was good to see really strong early-season swims. I asked them to race hard and smart, and for the most part they did."
 
Sophomore Jeff Beyer won the 200-yard freestyle in 1:47.94 and the 1,000-yard freestyle in 10:07.90 and finished the night with three of SU's eight performances that satisfied the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) qualifying standards. Beyer also finished second in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:47.94.
 
Freshman Eric Zimmerman met the PSAC standard in the 500-yard freestyle, posting a second-place time of 5:05.37, and also in the 1,000-yard freestyle – placing third in 10:19.47.
 
Freshmen Ely Fryer and Joe Deemer swam well in the 100-yard butterfly, posting respective conference cuts of 53.25 seconds and 54.41 seconds. Fryer finished in both the 100 butterfly and the 50-yard butterfly.
 
Sophomore Nick Bloom satisfied the conference standard in the 100-yard backstroke, placing second with a time of 55.62 seconds.
 
SU had an excellent race in the 200-yard freestyle relay to conclude the dual meet. Beyer, freshman Hunter Keck, Deemer and sophomore Adam Fox finished second, just .02 seconds behind IUP, with a time of 1:30.22.
 
"A lot of the times come with resting," Verge said. "I'm very proud of them after the week of work we've been having. I am sure IUP was tired too, and they looked sharp and ready to go. It was a fun, early season meet. That was a great way to kick off the year."
 
Shippensburg's next dual meet is in nine days, as the Raiders will host West Chester and Southern Connecticut State on October 13-14 from Donald N. Miller Pool.
