Men’s Swimming Defeats Fairmont State in Annual Dual Meet, 130-97

SU wins nine events, posts 12 PSAC cuts in strong performance

The Shippensburg University men's swimming team completed a rigorous training week on Friday with a successful dual-meet victory over Fairmont State, defeating the Fighting Falcons by a score of 130-97 in competition held at California University of Pennsylvania.

Shippensburg won nine events, highlighted by sophomore Jeff Beyer achieving a new pool record in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4:48.09. Beyer was one of three Raiders to win multiple events on the night, as he posted the top time in both the 500 and the 1,000-yard freestyle (10:17.23).

Sophomore Nick Bloom won three events, claiming gold in the 100-yard backstroke (54.95), 200-yard IM (2:03.77) and the 200-yard backstroke (2:00.60). Freshman Ely Fryer won both butterfly events, completing the 100 in 53.40 seconds and the 200 in 2:03.40.

"This is a really exciting win for our men's team," head coach Tim Verge said. "There's a been a bit of rivalry here over the last couple years, and they've recently gotten the better of us a couple times. Tonight was just our night. It's a really long day, to get off the bus and complete the training cycle of the week by racing this hard, I was really proud of them."

Other event winners on the night included freshman Hunter Keck taking the top time in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:03.35) and sophomore Callum Hamel doing so in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:20.18).

Shippensburg recorded 12 performances on the night that satisfied the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) qualifying standard. Junior Shane Kaliszewski, sophomore Adam Fox, freshman Joe Deemer and freshman Eric Zimmerman were among those with at least one conference cut in the meet.

"We had some really good swims time-wise for this part of the year," Verge said. "Jeff breaking the pool record was an outstanding accomplishment. We really raced hard, and we're excited with where we're at."

Shippensburg returns to action at 5 p.m. Friday when it hosts Clarion from Donald N. Miller Pool. It is the final home meet of the season, and the Raiders will honor their lone senior, Quinton Beck, before the meet.
