SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – Sophomore
Stephanie O'Toole set a new pool record in the 200-yard breaststroke on Friday night and contributed to a pool record in the 400-yard medley relay as the Shippensburg University women's swimming team posted dual-meet victories over California (Pa.) (114-85) and Fairmont State (145.5-50.5) from Donald N. Miller Pool.
Shippensburg won five events on the night, including both relays. The Raiders set the tone right away, breaking the pool record from 2007 (set by West Chester) in the 400-yard medley relay. Sophomore
Carly Alvarado, O'Toole, junior
Erin Fife and sophomore
Sidney Owens teamed up for a time of 4:01.25 – achieving a 10-second victory over second place.
O'Toole later crushed the pool record in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:21.13 – breaking the 2004 mark of Edinboro's Brooke Heath by more than three seconds (2:24.57). She now ranks second all-time in school history for the event. Another aspect of how impressive her swim was is the fact that Cal's Jade Arganbright – the reigning PSAC third-place finisher in the event – also broke the pool record Friday night but was 1.8 seconds behind in 2:22.99.
Earlier in the night, O'Toole won the 200-yard freestyle in 1:56.44. She had two of SU's eight performances on the night that satisfied the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) qualifying standards. Alvarado won the 200-yard backstroke, achieving a nice swim with a PSAC cut of 2:10.53.
Owens posted PSAC cuts in the 50-yard freestyle (25.65) and 200-yard butterfly (2:17.95), while Fife posted PSAC cuts in the 200-yard IM (2:16.53) and 200-yard butterfly (2:17.63). Sophomore
Lauren Ellis joined Fife and Owens with a PSAC cut in the 200-yard butterfly, posting a time of 2:20.63.
Shippensburg concluded the night with a victory in the 200-yard freestyle relay. Junior
MacKenna Angert, freshman
Felicia Chopyak, senior
Kaytee Garcia and junior
Jeanette Welch teamed up for a winning time of 1:45.51.
Shippensburg will travel to Clarion at 5 p.m. Friday for a dual meet with the Golden Eagles.
NOTE: Next Saturday's dual meet at Gannon has been canceled and will not be re-scheduled.
