Summer Baseball Wrapup: Marcinko's Valley League Heroics Highlight Raider Offseasons

SU had several players compete in various summer leagues across the country

SU shortstop Mike Marcinko capped off a dream summer Wednesday night (August 7) by hitting a walk-off RBI single in the bottom of the ninth inning to clinch the 2014 Valley League Championship for his team, the Waynesboro Generals.
 
Marcinko was named to the All-Valley League Second Team to highlight a group of Raider baseball players who remained active this summer in respective collegiate leagues:

Both Marcinko and pitcher Marcus Shippey played for the Waynesboro Generals.
 
Marcinko was a fixture in the Waynesboro lineup and hit .344 with nine extra-base hits, 18 RBIs, 35 walks, 13 stolen bases and 39 runs scored to cap off a memorable summer. In two years with Shippensburg, Marcinko has hit .305 with 14 extra-base hits, 40 RBIs, 19 stolen bases and 50 runs scored in 99 games.
 
Shippey appeared in nine games, making seven starts. He pitched to a 3.53 ERA, striking out 25 in 35.2 innings. He was also credited with a save. Shippey, a two-time All-PSAC pitcher, will enter his junior season having totaled a 6-4 record with two saves and a 2.27 ERA in 91 innings – striking out 67.

Careghini appeared in 21 games and had 45 at-bats for the Quakertown Blazers of the Atlantic Collegiate Baseball League. He had nine hits, two RBIs, a double and scored eight runs.
 
In his freshman season at SU, Careghini played in 16 games and scored six runs, adding three RBIs and two stolen bases.

Curtis pitched in six games this summer for the MoonDogs in Mankato, Minnesota – wearing No. 99. He threw 5.2 innings, allowed one earned run, and struck out five batters while walking three. His record was 1-1.
 
The MoonDogs play in the Northwoods League, considered one of the premier summer leagues in the country along with the Cape Cod League.
 
14827Kyle McClintock
 
McClintock played for the Ozark Generals and tied for the team lead with 15 appearances this summer. He threw 35.2 innings and had 19 strikeouts with the Generals, making four starts.
 
Through two seasons with Shippensburg, McClintock has won six games and compiled a 3.11 ERA in 55 innings with the Raiders.
 
Ozark is in the M.I.N.K. Collegiate Baseball League (MINK stands for Missouri, Iowa, Nebraska and Kansas). This is the same league as the Nevada Griffons, which featured current teammates Spanos and Michaud below.

Michaud and Spanos played for the Nevada (Missouri) Griffons of the M.I.N.K. Collegiate Baseball League, marking the third straight year that Shippensburg has had two of its players on the team.
 
Michaud pitched in eight games, making seven starts, and posted a 3.27 ERA. In 41.1 innings, Michaud went 3-1 and walked just six batters.
 
Spanos played in 25 games and hit .293 with three doubles, a homer and 11 RBIs. He had 24 hits and scored 10 runs.
 
Last year, Michael Douglas was named the M.I.N.K. League MVP and he had Cal Hogan as a teammate. In 2012, Pat Kregeloh and Tom Bush played for the Griffons.
 
Spanos has completed three seasons at Shippensburg and is fresh off a junior year in which he was named an All-PSAC First Team second baseman and an All-Region performer by the ABCA, Daktronics and the NCBWA. Michaud has appeared in 17 games (nine starts) with the Raiders over two years, winning four games and compiling a 3.58 ERA.
