Women’s Swimming Finishes Two-Day Tri-Meet With Five Wins and Nine More PSAC Cuts

SU gets event wins from Sargent, Fife and Angert while winning 200 medley and 400 free relay

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University women's swimming team capped off an impressive two-day showing at its home tri-meet with West Chester and Southern Connecticut State on Saturday with three individual victories, nine PSAC cuts and first-place performances in both relays from Donald N. Miller Pool.

In the day's first relay, freshman Rhyan Rodriguez, freshman Nicole Martorella, freshman Erin Fife and junior Carolyn Meier completed the 200-yard medley circuit in a sturdy time of 1:52.15 for a three-second victory.

The meet concluded with freshman MacKenna Angert, Meier, Fife and junior Rikki Sargent touching the wall in 3:41.92 for a seven-second win.

Angert won the 200-yard backstroke by more than two seconds, touching the wall in 2:15.01. Senior Jess Trgovic swam 2:17.20 for a conference cut of her own.

Sargent completed the 200 IM in 2:17.50 and the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:30.54 for her conference qualifiers. Martorella also notched a 200-yard breaststroke conference qualifier by swimming 2:33.55.

Fife impressed by taking the 100-yard butterfly in 1:00.31; she came within one second of cracking SU's all-time Top 10 in the event despite it being her first collegiate swim. Meier continued to showcase her mettle in the 200-yard freestyle by posting a time of 1:57.29.

Senior Tara Yohe and freshman Jeanette Welch began the day by satisfying the conference-qualifying standard in the mile, swimming the 1,650-yard freestyle in 18:34 and 18:45 respectively.

From a scoring perspective, Shippensburg posted a healthy victory over Southern Connecticut State while finishing just 10 points shy of eight-time defending league champion West Chester without any of the events being scratched.

Shippensburg returns to action on October 31 when it travels to California (Pa.) for an evening dual meet with the Vulcans and Fairmont State.
