RECAP: Wrestling Notches Home Victory Over Elizabethtown, 28-13

SU rallies with seven victories, including falls by Rush, Berberick

The Shippensburg University wrestling team won seven of the last eight bouts on Friday night, including two by fall, to come from behind and defeat Elizabethtown, 28-13, in a non-conference dual meet with the Blue Jays from Heiges Field House.

Junior Cole Rush started a streak of six straight wins for the Raiders with a victory by fall in 3:50 at 141 pounds. Freshman Colton Babcock emerged with a 5-3 decision at 149 pounds, as he was able to survive a late reversal on the strength of riding time from an early takedown and second-period points from an escape and an opponent stall call.

Freshman Drake Brenize gave SU the lead after a 13-4 major decision at 157 pounds. Brenize scored five takedowns in his match and accrued a three-minute riding-time advantage over the course of his victory.

Redshirt-junior Abner Thompson claimed victory in one of the more entertaining bouts of the night, posting a 5-3 sudden victory at 165 pounds. Thompson held a 3-2 lead but received a second stalling warning in the final second of regulation, resulting in overtime. He scored a takedown 44 seconds into the extra period to secure the decision.

Redshirt-junior Adam Martz appeared at 174 pounds and scored six takedowns in a 13-6 decision. Junior Ryan Narber trailed 1-0 entering the third period of his 184-pound bout but quickly worked an escape and takedown, accruing a 1:15 riding-time advantage to win 4-1.

The evening concluded with junior Derek Berberick pinning Quinn Hogue in 77 seconds. Berberick improved to 8-4 for the season, including 6-1 in duals. He currently leads the Raiders in victories.

Elizabethtown started out with a 10-0 lead through two bouts, receiving a defensive pin at 125 pounds from Josh McLaughlin and a 9-0 major decision at 133 from Colton Rex, who scored all of his points in the first period. Elijah Flasher used a riding-time advantage for a 5-4 win at 197 pounds.

The evening began with one exhibition match, as freshman Nick Dahl posted a victory by fall in 3:22 over Dan Jerrems.
