The Shippensburg University wrestling team begins its postseason and the road to nationals with the NCAA Division II Super Region 1 Championships at East Stroudsburg's Koehler Fieldhouse Saturday at 10 a.m.
Â
The top three wrestlers in each weight bracket Saturday will qualify for the NCAA Division II National Championships held Mar. 13-14 in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
Â
Tickets can only be purchased on site. More information about the Super Region 1 Championships, including the projected schedule, can be accessed through the East Stroudsburg home page linked above.
Â
For Shippensburg, many of the wrestlers in the wrestling room feel as if they are peaking at the right moment and are ready to test themselves against the region's best. That group includes graduate
Nick Delp and redshirt-junior
Mike Trainor – two wrestlers that placed fourth at regionals last season.
Â
"I think myself and most of the guys on the team are ready to let it rip and let it go, because we've put in so much time during the season and so many hours in and out of the wrestling room," Trainor said. "All of our work is done, now it's time to go out there and just wrestle."
Â
"My mindset has been keep working hard and getting better each day," said Delp. "When I get discouraged or frustrated I just go back to doing what I can control. Control the positions that you can, score the points when you can. The little things like that."
Â
Super Region 1 is comprised of 12 teams – the eight PSAC Division II wrestling programs (East Stroudsburg, Gannon, Kutztown, Mercyhurst, Millersville, Pitt-Johnstown, Seton Hill and Shippensburg) – along with Mountain East schools Fairmont State and Frostburg State. New to the region this season is a pair of Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) reps – Bridgeport and Felician.
Â
Delp enters regionals as the nation's 9th ranked wrestler at 165 pounds. He got an early taste of regionals when he took on 13th-ranked Bailey Gimbor of Kutztown during a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) dual in mid-February – a match Delp won 3-0.
Â
"I knew that I had to be locked in toward the end of the season regardless." Delp said of the Gimbor bout. "I was really excited to wrestle [Gimbor]. That was a really good test to see where I'm at. I've got plenty of tough competition coming up. I'm really excited to see where I'm at in this tournament."
Â
Every wrestler who steps on the mat, whether at youth level, high school or college, knows the importance of the postseason and what it means to be a national qualifier and an All-American.
Â
For Shippensburg, the best way to describe it is simple: nothing else matters.
Â
"It's the most important time of the year," Trainor mentioned. "We don't train to win an open tournament during the season, or train to win one certain match, because at the end of the day at regionals is when things matter and when your season can start or end. I just want to leave it all on the mat. I want to look back and know that I gave my full effort. I want to wrestle my hardest."
Â
Added junior
Diesel Koser, "All the sacrifices that we have made, the practicing and the cutting weight, it all leads up to this. I only have this time and one other time to go and try to do this. I'm going to give it my all and we'll see how it goes."
