EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa. – Nick Delp became Shippensburg University wrestling's first national qualifier since the 2022-23 season after overcoming adversity to reach the 165-pound final Saturday at the NCAA Division II Super Region 1 Championships hosted by East Stroudsburg.
Delp's second place finish at 165 pounds highlighted four Raider place-winners at Saturday's regional tournament. Joining him on the podium were
Diesel Koser (fifth place at 197 pounds),
Mike Trainor (sixth place at 149) and
Kyle von Schmidt (sixth place at 133).
Delp nearly saw his regional tournament run end moments after it started, as an injury just seconds into his open round match resulted in a lengthy delay and forced him into concussion protocol. After being cleared to return, the SU graduate stormed back to earn a 20-3 tech fall win.
A pin of Fairmont State's Brock Evans in the quarterfinals set up a semifinal matchup against Pitt-Johnstown's Trent Hoover.
With a chance to clinch a ticket to nationals (the top three in each weight class qualify), Delp came back from an early 3-0 deficit to win a close decision. After surrendering the initial takedown, the SHIP wrestler scored takedowns in the second and the third periods and fought off a late charge from his opponent to hold on for a 9-7 victory.
Delp ultimately opted to medically forfeit the 165-pound final, awarding Gannon's Grant MacKay the 165-pound title.
Koser's four-win day began with a last-second takedown to force overtime against Frostburg's Nick McCarthy. Koser would go on to pin McCarthy in the extra session for a thrilling opening round win.
The Ship 197-pounder went on to score a pair of tech falls before topping Wheeling's Jaxon Bucher, 5-0, in the fifth-place match.
Trainor and von Schmidt each notched a pair of wins in their respective weight brackets, while
Kyler Everly scored an opening round pin at 174 pounds.
Shippensburg placed seventh in the overall team standings. Gannon took home the 2026 Super Region 1 team championship.
The NCAA Division II National Championships will take place in Sioux Falls, South Dakota March 13-14.
