The Shippensburg University women's swimming team traveled to Fairmont State on Friday night for quad-meet with the host Fighting Falcons, Millersville and California (Pa.), and the Raiders claiming dual victories over all three teams in competition from the Feaster Center.
Shippensburg and California were the closest, with the Raiders claiming a 107-97 victory. SU defeated the hosts, 133-69, and the Marauders, 152-52.
SU won on account of depth, as the only two Raiders to win events on the night were seniors
Claire Koons and
Carly Alvarado. Koons posted the fastest time in the 50-yard freestyle, touching the wall in 25.93 seconds, while Alvarado won the 100-yard backstroke in 1:01.68.
Alvarado's performance in the 100-yard backstroke was the only Raider performance of the night to satisfy the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) qualifying standard.
Shippensburg notched a number of second-place finishes on the night. Freshman
Madison Breiner had two, claiming the runner-up times in the 200-yard freestyle (2:05.67) and the 500-yard freestyle (5:41.48).
Freshman
Tomomi Nakano was the runner-up in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 57.39 seconds. Junior
Gracee Tothero nearly had a PSAC cut in the 100-yard breaststroke, posting a time of 1:11.49. Freshman
Olivia Guthy took second in the 1,000-yard freestyle, touching the wall in 11:21.03.
In relay competition, SU opened with Alvarado, Tothero, freshman
Bri Joll and Koons combining for a 200-yard medley time of 1:55.01. The evening concluded with Nakano, Koons, sophomore
Mari Reott and sophomore
Kayla Sudbrink completing the 200-yard freestyle relay in 1:44.06.
