Men’s Swimming Returns to Action With Road Dual Meet at Gannon

SU gets two wins from Jeff Beyer, 13 Top 3 finishes against Golden Knights

The Shippensburg University men's swimming team returned to action Thursday night with a road dual meet in Erie against fellow Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) opponent Gannon, competing against the Golden Knights from the Carneval Athletic Pavilion Pool.

"Although we didn't get the win here, we really stepped up and swam terrific I thought," head coach Tim Verge said of his swimmers. "We swam as well as the women but the score doesn't reflect it. We had mixed a few things up and people really showed some toughness for their teammates."

Sophomore Jeff Beyer won two events, claiming first in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:45.17 and first in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4:47.68. Beyer's performances were two of SU's nine swims that satisfied the conference qualifying standards.

Sophomore Nick Bloom took second in the 400-yard IM in 4:22.23 and third in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 54.11 seconds. Junior Shane Kaliszewski paced the Raiders in the 50-yard freestyle, finishing third in 22.70 seconds.

Freshman Hunter Keck finished second in the 100-yard freestyle, posting a time of 48.64 seconds, while freshman Joe Deemer placed third in the 100-yard butterfly in 53.75 seconds. Freshman Eric Zimmerman rounded out those with PSAC cuts with a 500-yard freestyle time of 5:00.97.

In SU's relays, Bloom, Keck, Kaliszewski and sophomore Adam Fox opened the meet with a second-place time of 1:39.82 in the 200-yard medley relay. In the 400-yard freestyle relay, it was Keck, Beyer, freshman Emmett Langan and Deemer who concluded the meet with a second-place time of 3:18.50.

"Our energy was very good," Verge said. "We've been training really well, and like everyone, we are a bit beat up. I really I couldn't be much happier. I think we'll have to be just a bit more "perfect' tomorrow if we are going to beat Edinboro. Their men are pretty good this year."

Shippensburg competes at 11 a.m. Friday at Edinboro, completing its weekend in Northwest Pennsylvania.
